Kerry was born in Thames on 13 September 1937 and educated at Whitianga School, Mount Albert Grammar School, Auckland Teachers College, Victoria University of Wellington (BA 1991).
He joined the NZ Army in 1958 in CMT 26. He served in the TF from 1960–1974, which included service in 62 Bty 6LAA Regt; TOSTU; Survey Sect, Met Loc Svy Troop and RHQ, 16Fd Regt; 11(A) Bty 16 Fd Regt; and 4 (G)Mdm Battery.
Exercises outside of New Zealand included; Australia 1965, Malaya 1982, and Hawaii 1983. He served in the RF from 1975 to 1983, which included service in UNMOGIP, UNTSO, NZ Def HQ, HQ 1TFR.

Civilian Activity 1956–2002: Kerry was a Primary School Teacher for ten years from 1956–1966 and a Secondary [PE] Teacher from 1966–73. He worked in the State Service from 1984–1990 and again from 1995–2000, and in the Health Department from 1991–1995.
Kerry has 2 children and 4 grandsons from his first marriage, and 3 stepchildren from his second marriage to Lynette. In his sporting days he played Basketball, Hockey, Rugby, Rowing, and Softball, and he still enjoys Smallbore Rifle Shooting. He was an inter-city and inter-services Basketball Referee and a keen Hash House Harrier. He took an OE in the UK from 2000–2002, which included a motorhome tour of Europe Apr–Sep 2002.
He was a volounteer with VSA in Timor Leste from 2005–2006.
Kerry is currently a Rowing Regatta Official, an International Shooting Official, President of the Palmerston North Caravan Club, and a member of the Otaki RSA.
