Gunners Day 26 May 2015

This important day in the Artillery Calendar falls on 26 May each year. On that day in 1716, King George 1st issued a Royal Warrant forming the first regular artillery force in Britain. The Royal Regiment of Artillery (RA) therefore acknowledge 26 May as their birthday, and celebrate it in appropriate Gunner fashion. As the RNZA is a Commonwealth Artillery Regiment allied to the RA, The Royal New Zealand Artillery recognizes the Royal Artillery customs and traditions.

Armstrong Field Guns and Coehorn Mortars were used by the British and Colonial Artillery during the New Zealand Land wars 1845-47 and 1860-86 and particularly at the Battle of Ruapekapeka Pa 1845/46
& at the Battles at Rangiriri 1863, Orakau, Te Ranga and Gate Pa in 1864.  Image courtesy Alexander Turnbull Library
