The Royal New Zealand Artillery
It is with much regret I advise that Colonel Matthew Beattie, our Colonel Commandant since 2017, passed away at Mary Potter Hospice in Wellington at 1230 hrs yesterday, Monday 9th September. Sarah, Emilie, and Alex were with Matt at the time of his passing.
Matt served from 1974 to 1998, beginning as a TF Gnr, L/Bdr, and Bdr with 22(D) Bty in Wellington before being commissioned as first a TF then an RF RNZA officer. He served as BC of 161 Bty from 1990-91, was CO of 16th Field Regt from 1995-97, and also served in Bosnia as Senior National Officer for NZIFOR, finishing up his fulltime Army career in 1998 at HQ NZDF as Deputy Director Joint Operations. After resigning his commission Matt founded Instep, a behavioural healthcare company. Matt then agreed to become Col Comdt of the RNZA in 2017 and served in that role until very recently.
Rest in Peace Matt.
Thank you for your service.
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
WE STAND ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS
LEST WE FORGET
Matt's Funeral will be be held at the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul (2 Hill St) on Monday 16 September at 1100 hrs. Matt will be accorded full military honours, less a firing party, as he will be cremated.
