The First World War was for a long time a forgotten war in Germany. In the collective memory of most Germans, the recollections of the First World War were replaced with those of the Second World War and the crimes committed by Germans between 1939 and 1945. There was no great public interest in the centenary of the great seminal catastrophe of the 20th century. In contrast, the remembrance of the Great War or Grande Guerre constitutes an eminent feature of public life and political affairs in France and Great Britain that is highlighted in the ceremonies commemorating the armistice on 11 November 1918. The multitudes of recent publications on the First World War and the media coverage of the topic show that many people in Germany have again become interested in the First World War and particularly in the “war-guilt” issue

Colonel Dr Hans-Hubertus Mack is Director of the Bundeswehr Center of Military History and Social Sciences, a position he has held since January 2013. A career officer in the Bundeswehr, Colonel Mack was previously battalion commander of a light infantry battalion, assistant branch chief at the Federal Ministry of Defence, and lecturer for security policy at the George C. Marshall Center, Garmisch-Partenkirchen.  He is currently President of the Commission for Military History in the Federal Republic of Germany.
